Crystal and her classmates always wondered what it would be like if they had a class pet. What kind of animal would it be? What would they name it? They imagined different adventures every day!

One sunny Friday, Crystal noticed a funny smell as she arrived in the classroom.

As all of the other children filled their seats, they scrunched their noses in the air.

“Ew, what’s that smell?”

Once the class had settled, their teacher, Mrs. Walker, came in holding a carton of eggs.

“Good morning, everyone.”

“Good morning,” the class echoed.

“You might be wondering what that smell is,” Mrs.Walker said as she noticed her students holding their noses.

“Well, here is our new class project,” she continued as she held up the carton of eggs.

All the students looked at one another with confusion. Mrs. Walker opened the carton, and inside were a dozen decorated eggs. Each egg was painted beautifully, resembling fine china.

“These will be your pets for the weekend,” Mrs.Walker explained, holding a couple carefully in the air.

“Now, you must take good care of them and bring them back exactly how they are now.”

Mrs.Walker continued to explain the rules, and Crystal made sure to listen carefully.

As the teacher began to hand them out, Crystal noticed some of her classmates looked really worried. But they all took their eggs and began to make cushions, pens, and other soft furnishings to keep them safe.

At the end of the day, the children walked swiftly, but carefully, outside to show their parents. However, one boy’s egg was already missing.

“I got hungry,” he said, full of guilt and a hard- boiled egg.

Over the next few days, Crystal’s classmates found the task quite difficult.

Bella lost her egg. No matter how hard her family looked, they just could not find it anywhere.

Oscar was playing rough and tumble with his little brother, and he smashed his egg to pieces.

Jasper cracked his egg too. He tried to fix the egg with glue, but it did not look the same.

Some curious pets took nibbles, while tempted siblings made their own decorations on top.

The students felt a rainbow of emotions, from anger to upset and everything in between.

Luckily for Crystal, she was extra careful. She made a nice cushion for the egg to sit on, kept it out of reach from her pets, and made sure her siblings knew they were not allowed to touch it.

By the time Monday came around, the students were worn out and glad that the project was over.

All except, Crystal.

Crystal’s hard work had paid off. No scratches or smears. She was the only student who managed to bring her egg in exactly as she was given it.

“Wow,” all of Crystal’s classmates murmured in amazement.

“Well done, Crystal,” Mrs. Walker congratulated.

The teacher then explained to her class how the project was a test of responsibility, to see how well they all took care of something.

“It was harder than you expected, wasn’t it?” Mrs. Walker asked the class.

They all nodded in agreement.

For the rest of the day, Mrs. Walker asked Crystal to teach the class all the ways she kept her pet egg safe. From its soft and secure home to keeping it out of reach from harmful hands and paws. The students felt like they were learning a lot.

At the end of the day, Mrs. Walker announced how proud she was of Crystal and the whole class.

“As you showed me you are able to care for something, we will be getting a class pet!”

Some of the children couldn’t believe it, they wondered if it would be another egg.

Mrs. Walker reached into the cupboard and pulled out a cage.

“This is our new class hamster, which we will need to take good care of!”

“Ooh,” the class squealed with excitement.

“And as a reward for Crystal taking the best care of her egg, she gets to name the hamster,” Mrs. Walker said.

Crystal thought for a moment while the class wondered what name she might choose.

“Ah, I’ve got it!” Crystal began, “We will name him Eggy!”

“That’s a wonderful choice,” Mrs. Walker said, and the rest of the classmates laughed in agreement.
