Georgie Porgy - The Sweet and Silly Porridge and Pie
What is the rhyme about?
This short rhyme is pretty cute and pinch cheeky - Georgie gives kisses, makes some fuss, and then dashes off! Children get to enjoy the pattern and the rhythm; alongside the story it tells.
Fun Facts for Little Ones
Old! It is one of the older rhymes; it was first printed in 1841 as Georgy Porgy in a publication called The Kentish Coronal.
Pudding and Pie were well-known in the 'olden days', just like some of the desserts we know and enjoy as modern-day treats!
The version we know and grew up with as children, 'when the boys came out to play,' is presumed to have appeared in 1884. That is how most children sing it to date.
It is presumed Georgie might have existed and is supposed to be Prince Regent George IV, who was well known for his sweet and romantic side.
Few, like the band Toto, have also included it in their songs, such as 'Georgy Porgy' in 1970.
Why We Love It at Monkey Pen
At Monkey Pen, we love to see kids giggle and wiggle with joy, especially to the rhyme "Georgie Porgy." It is super silly and also teaches kids to learn and love expressiveness and to rhyme words.
Georgie Porgy also prompts gentle feelings and friendship discussions with soft questions like, "Why did Georgie run away?" or "How do you feel when someone kisses you?" It is perfect for us because we dwell in a world of whimsical songs and stories that educate and entertain simultaneously.
Move, Sing, and Play: Georgie Waits for Action
Who is ready for some pretend play with Georgie? It is acting time.
Pudding and Pie Pretend – Pretend you hold a pie in your hands, then say, "Yum."
Georgie's Kiss: Blow a pretend kiss, then make a shocked face as Georgie would.
Run Away! – March or tiptoe fast as Georgie would when the boys came to play.
Be the Girls or Boys: Join, clap, or giggle and do the crowd's make-believe cheers.
Get Art Creative: Draw Georgie's face or make simple stick puppets to act out the lines.
Georgie rhyme is made memorable with movement and coordination, and, of course, these actions.
Sing Along Time!
Now let's sing the rhyme together! As before, you can sing it slow or fast, and even change voices - Georgie can be quiet, then loud as he runs! You can even create your ending:
Georgie Porgy stayed to play
Then they all laughed and shouted, "Hooray!"
