Ben was a young beaver who liked everything to happen in the right order.

Every morning, he woke when sunlight touched his round window.

Then he ate warm oatcakes with berry jam, crossed the little log bridge and followed the riverside path to school.

But one Tuesday, nothing went as planned.

Ben woke to find the sun high above the river.

“I’m late!” he cried, rushing downstairs.

“The fire went out, so breakfast isn’t ready,” Mama Beaver explained, giving him apples and hazelnuts for his journey.

Ben sighed. He had wanted oatcakes with berry jam.

“This day is completely backward,” he grumbled.

He picked up his schoolbag and hurried outside.

Then he heard an unusual sound.

Drip. Drip. Drip-drip-drip.

Water was slipping through a hole in the family dam. Papa Beaver was trying to block it with sticks and mud.

“Oh, no!” cried Ben. “Now the dam is leaking too!”

“I can repair it,” said Papa, “but I need one stronger branch.”

Ben looked towards the school path. He was already late. Still, he could not leave Papa struggling alone.

He searched the riverbank, found a sturdy branch and dragged it over. Together, they pushed it into the gap. Soon, the dripping stopped.

“Thank you,” said Papa. “You found exactly what I needed.”

Ben felt a little better as he hurried away.

When he reached the log bridge, however, he stopped again.

A large willow tree had fallen across the path. Its leafy branches blocked the whole road.

“What else can go wrong?” Ben groaned.

Nearby, the Otter family was picnicking beneath the fallen tree.

“Would you like a honey bun?” asked Mrs Otter.

Hungry Ben joined them, sharing his apples with the little otters.

“We planned to picnic on the hill, but the fallen tree led us to this lovely spot,” Mrs Otter explained.

Ben admired the sparkling river and cool willow shade. She was right.

After thanking the Otters, Ben continued towards school.

Since his usual path was blocked, he walked towards the old lily pond instead.

Near the pond, water from the leaking dam had collected in a small hollow.

Something wriggled beneath the clear surface.

“Tadpoles!” whispered Ben.

Dozens of tiny tadpoles darted between the reeds. Some looked like wiggly commas. Others rested on smooth stones.

Ben watched one swim beneath a lily pad and appear on the other side. He had passed nearby many times but had never noticed them before.

Soon, Ben reached a thick wall of reeds. The path seemed to disappear.

“Now I’m lost,” he muttered.

Just then, a little brown water bird stepped from the grass.

It walked between two tall clumps of reeds and vanished.

Curious, Ben followed it.

Behind the reeds, he discovered a narrow path of firm, dry ground.

It curved around the muddy riverbank and led straight to the school garden.

There were no slippery logs or steep hills. It was safer than his usual route.

When Ben entered the classroom, Miss Willow was writing on the board.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” he said. “I thought everything had gone wrong.”

Then he told the class about helping Papa, picnicking with the Otters, seeing tadpoles and finding a secret path.

Miss Willow smiled. “Sometimes changed plans lead to wonderful discoveries.”

Ben realised she was right.

He had missed his oatcakes but enjoyed a honey bun with new friends. The dam had leaked, but the water had formed a pond for tadpoles. The bridge was blocked, but he had found a safer path.

Perhaps it had not been a backward day after all.

Perhaps it had simply taken him in a new direction.

After school, Ben showed his friends the winding reed path and the tiny tadpoles.

When he arrived home, Mama had warm oatcakes waiting for him.

“How was your day?” she asked.

“Nothing happened the way I planned,” Ben replied, spreading berry jam on an oatcake.

He took a happy bite.

“And I’m glad it didn’t.”

Moral: When plans change, stay curious. An unexpected path may lead to something wonderful.
