Rosie had a little brown teddy named Buttons.
He wasn’t new, and his fur was worn from many hugs.
But to Rosie, he was the best teddy in the world.
Buttons went everywhere with her.
He joined her at breakfast, drawing time, tea parties, and bedtime stories.
Whether Rosie was happy or sad, Buttons was always there.
They were together every day.
Rosie couldn’t remember a day without him.
Every morning, Rosie reached for Buttons beside her pillow.
He was soft, cuddly, and always there.
They spent each day playing and having little adventures together.
At night, Buttons listened to Rosie’s stories and gave the best hugs.
He never complained or asked for a rest.
One evening, after Rosie had fallen asleep, Buttons let out a tiny yawn.
"Oh," he whispered.
"I love being with Rosie... but I think I need one little day off."
The Moon, peeking through the window, heard him.
It smiled kindly.
"Tomorrow is your holiday."
The next morning, Rosie woke up with a big smile.
"Buttons?"
She looked beside her pillow.
Under the blanket.
Behind the curtains.
No Buttons.
Only a tiny note lay on her bed.
It read:
"I'm taking one little day off.
See you tomorrow!
Love, Buttons."
Rosie giggled.
"Buttons is on holiday!"
She wondered where he had gone.
All day, Rosie imagined Buttons having funny adventures.
"Maybe he's having a picnic with the toy rabbit."
"Maybe he's sliding down a rainbow."
"Or flying on a friendly bird!"
The more she imagined, the more she smiled.
But when lunchtime came...
Rosie quietly looked at the empty chair beside her.
"It feels funny without Buttons," she whispered.
She missed giving him pretend cookies.
She missed carrying him everywhere.
That evening, when it was time for bed, Rosie hugged her pillow.
"It isn't quite the same," she said softly.
Just then...
there was a gentle tap... tap... tap at the window.
Rosie looked up.
There sat Buttons.
He wore a tiny paper hat.
A little green leaf was tucked behind one ear.
And tied to his paw was a tiny daisy.
Rosie laughed happily.
"Buttons! You're back!"
She gave him the biggest cuddle ever.
Buttons felt warm and cosy again.
Rosie smiled.
"I didn't know how much I loved having you with me every day."
From then on, Rosie never forgot to say,
"Thank you for being my best cuddle buddy, Buttons."
And every night, Buttons sat proudly beside her pillow...
ready for another wonderful day together.
