Every summer, ten-year-old Milan visited his grandmother’s peaceful village.
With swaying coconut trees, chirping sparrows and the sweet smell of mangoes, it always felt special to him.
But this year, he brought his tablet and headphones, planning to finish a new adventure game.
After lunch, Grandma returned with a faded leather tube tied with a blue ribbon.
“I’ve been saving this for the right summer,” she said.
Inside was an old map showing a mango tree, bridge, well, windmill and teacup.
At the bottom, it read: “Follow the map. The treasure is waiting.”
“A treasure?” Milan asked, his eyes widening.
Grandma smiled. “You’ll have to find out.”
The next morning, the map led them to a huge mango tree.
“There’s no treasure here,” Milan said, searching the roots.
“Oh, there is,” Grandma smiled.
She told him about the rope swing she shared with her brothers and how Grandpa rescued her kite from the tree.
Milan looked at it differently. It wasn’t just a tree—it was full of stories.
The second picture led them to a narrow stream.
“I learnt to swim here,” Grandma said. “I was frightened, but my father promised he wouldn’t let me fall.”
She skipped a pebble across the water.
“That was when I first believed I could do something difficult.”
Milan quietly skipped one too.
The third drawing led them to an old railway bridge.
As a train passed, Grandma waved.
“You still do that?” Milan laughed.
“I’ve waved at every train since I was twelve. One day, your grandfather waved back—that’s how we first noticed each other.”
“So… Grandpa didn’t meet you on social media?” Milan grinned.
Each day, another clue led them to a special place—a tea shop, Grandma’s old school, a banyan tree, or a tiny library.
Milan searched for treasure but found precious stories instead.
Soon, he forgot his tablet and happily explored with Grandma.
With every memory, the map became more special.
On the final evening, the last drawing led them to a hill overlooking the village.
As the sun set, Milan whispered, “The treasure must be here.”
They searched near rocks, bushes, and an old bench but found nothing.
“I don’t think there is any treasure,” Milan sighed.
Grandma sat beside him and smiled.
“Oh, there is.”
Grandma gently took the old map.
“My grandfather once walked this path with me and shared our family’s stories,” she said. “Later, he gave me this map to pass on.”
At last, Milan understood. The treasure was Grandma’s memories—and now they belonged to him too.
The next morning, as the car pulled away, Milan carefully placed the map in its leather tube.
“I’ll keep it safe,” he promised.
Grandma smiled. “Good. But a map is only useful if you keep walking its paths.”
Milan already longed to return for more stories—stories he could one day share with his own grandchildren.
