How to Draw a City Skyline – Easy Urban Scene Drawing for Kids

This city skyline drawing lesson takes what looks like a busy urban scene and turns it into a calm, step-by-step building process. You start with simple outlines on the ground and gradually add trees, roads, and a variety of buildings each one growing taller and more detailed as the scene expands. The visual steps make it easy for beginners to follow along without feeling overwhelmed by all the structures. It also includes downloadable PDF worksheets you can print and practice again and again, so kids can refine their skyline, experiment with different building styles, and slowly build confidence in drawing city scenes that feel alive and structured.

Learn how to draw a city skyline step by step with simple instructions from Monkey Pen.

Step 1: First draw a small tree on the ground, having a trunk along with tiny branches above it.

Step 2: Show leaves on the tree that look like fluffy clouds.

Step 3: Draw a slightly smaller tree behind.

Step 4: Draw a seven-shaped line to indicate a special lane where trees grow.

Step 5: Complete the outer edges of the lane using an inclined line.

Step 6: Add a tall building behind the lane.

Step 7: Include architectural details for the building by placing a thin rectangle on top and stretching it below vertically with a straight line.

Step 8: Beside it, create an even taller building, which resembles the outline of the letter ‘F’.

Step 9: Provide details for this building as well. (Refer to step 7.)

Step 10: Above this building, create a tower by placing rectangles one above the other in decreasing size order. Also draw a vertical line that runs in the middle and looks like a needle at the tip.

Step 11: Near this, draw a short, rectangle-shaped building.

Step 12: Then draw a line vertically to show the sides of the building.

Step 13: Create a taller building on top of it.

Step 14: Repeat step 7 to provide detailing.

Step 15: Just beside it, on the ground level, add another small tree.

Step 16: Add the tree trunk and the ground surface.

Step 17: Design the lane for it, with a sloping line.

Step 18: Draw another line to show the inner lane.

Step 19: Draw a tree that is three times larger than the previous one.

Step 20: Create the tree trunk along with the ground and add branches above it

Step 21: Add fluffy designs within every treetop to show the dense leaves.

Step 22: Behind the trees on the left lane, design a building that is neither long nor short.

Step 23: Provide detailing for it. (Repeat step 7)

Step 24: Draw thin vertical stripes for the tallest building among all.

Step 25: Add arrow patterns in a sequence both vertically and horizontally on the shortest building.

Step 26: Include the same for the building located next to it.

Step 27: On the last building, include straight lines arranged in a vertical manner

Step 28: Add fluffy clouds in the sky above.

Step 29: Modern city skyline art is over.
