How to Draw a Crane – Easy Step-by-Step Bird Drawing for Kids

This crane drawing lesson takes a towering construction machine and makes it feel surprisingly easy to build on the page. The step-by-step visual guide walks learners through creating the tall structure, long lifting arm, and hook using simple geometric shapes that gradually come together into a full industrial scene. It’s a great activity for kids who love big machines and enjoy structured, detail-by-detail drawing practice. Printable PDF worksheets are included, giving space to repeat each step, refine proportions, and watch a powerful crane take shape line by line from a basic sketch to a complete construction illustration.

Are you curious in how to sketch a crane? Find this step-by-step tutorial from Monkey Pen.

Step 1: First draw a long, narrow, sharp beak with straight line passing centrally within the beak. This defines the upper and lower beak.

Step 2: Draw its head and back neck that look like upside-down S.

Step 3: Add its front neck in the shape of the number ‘7’.

Step 4: Make its body with a wide curve behind the neck.

Step 5: From the front neck extend a curved line containing a few tiny spikes.

Step 6: Below the lower part of the body, add a half V, which is its thigh.

Step 7: Create a straight line vertically with long, sharp claws.

Step 8: Draw another line parallel to the first one. This is the whole leg. Finish the claws that are left over.

Step 9: Use the same V form to draw the other thigh.

Step 10: Under the thigh, draw a vertical line along with pointed claws.

Step 11: Complete the full leg having narrow claws.

Step 12: Arrange long, narrow U's in a horizontal sequence, which is a wing.

Step 13: Create a few narrower U's for the wing pattern.

Step 14: Add little U's and a rounded 'L' beside it for the whole wing.

Step 15: Make a feather outline at the back using sharp spikes.

Step 16: Add a few more spikes to finish the outline.

Step 17: A few smaller spikes can be included beside, for the feather pattern.

Step 18: Within the feather outline, draw sharp spikes that indicate the layer of feathers.

Step 19: Draw a narrow, double layered spiral design behind the beak, within the head.

Step 20: Add a sequence of small and tiny 'U's, for a layer of wings.

Step 21: Below it, create the next layer of wing pattern.

Step 22: Complete that layer of wing pattern using small 'U's.

Step 23: Provide round eyes for the bird.

Step 24: You have sketched a tall crane.
