How to Draw a Porcupine – Fun Animal Drawing Tutorial for Kids

This porcupine drawing lesson turns a spiky, detailed animal into something surprisingly simple and fun to sketch. The step-by-step visual guide helps learners start with basic shapes and gradually add the body, face, and signature quills without feeling overwhelmed. It’s a great choice for kids and beginner artists who enjoy drawing unique wildlife and learning how texture can be built with easy strokes. Spiky quills and tiny paws turn this woodland creature into a fun and exciting drawing activity for young artists.

Step 1: Sketch the porcupine's pointed nose, curving forehead, and a small lower facial line.

Step 2: Add the nose, eyes, mouth, as shown in the image.

Step 3: Draw the first sharp quills above the head.

Step 4: Add additional long quills to the back of the upper part.

Step 5: Continue drawing the long-pointed quills toward the back.

Step 6: Insert the pointed quills on the back of your porcupine.

Step 7: Make further short quills along the backside towards the lower side.

Step 8: Finish your lower quills by making a few more strokes with the pointed ends.

Step 9: Draw the front leg with the claws of a small paw.

Step 10: Add the second front leg, and bend at the chest.

Step 11: Draw the belly line toward the back.

Step 12: Join the first back leg with the foot of a smaller size.

Step 13: Draw the back leg, then finish the lower body form.

Step 14: Add additional long quill lines along the upper back.

Step 15: Draw additional pointed quills towards the back.

Step 16: Create small quill lines around the head and upper body.

Step 17: Make more quick quill marks along the middle of the body.

Step 18: Make small quill marks on the front legs and body.

Step 19: Draw a circular eye in the face.

Step 20: Color the pupils of the eyes, leaving a small white shimmer.

Step 21: Carefully dim the eyes to finish your porcupine sketch. Now it’s time to color your drawing!
