How to Draw a Praying Mantis – Easy Insect Drawing for Kids

This praying mantis drawing lesson turns a complex-looking insect into a surprisingly approachable step-by-step sketch. You begin with simple guiding shapes and gradually build its distinctive form starting from the antennae and head, then shaping the long neck, folded raptorial legs, and slender body. Each stage is broken down visually, so even detailed parts like the spiky forelegs and wings feel easy to follow. It also includes downloadable PDF worksheets you can print and reuse, making practice feel relaxed and repeatable.

Step 1: First draw the antennae, which are long, thin and narrow and separated by a tiny curve.

Step 2: Then draw the rounded head which looks like a U.

Step 3: Create the other side of the head, followed by a sharp curve for the lower part.

Step 4: Add eyes and mouth using small ovals and a tiny, wide curve.

Step 5: Draw its neck with a hooklike design.

Step 6: Complete the neck with a small curve.

Step 7: Create its front leg using long ovals that join to form a V shape. Also add spikes on the front foreleg.

Step 8: Then draw the sharp folded legs that look like inverted Vs, followed by a sharp claw at the tip. Don’t forget to add a tiny curve that runs inside the neck.

Step 9: Join the neck and forelegs using a tiny curve above and a slightly bigger curve between the claw and front leg. Also add another pair of legs along with claws, next to the first foreleg.

Step 10: Draw a tubular shape below the neck. Also create its abdomen with a slanting line below the first foreleg.

Step 11: Create its wing at the back with a long hook design.

Step 12: Add its middle leg that looks like a series of chains connected.

Step 13: Draw a small line to complete the wing that starts between the tubular design and middle leg.

Step 14: Below the wing, draw a curved line for the abdomen.

Step 15: Draw the hind leg that looks like an inverted V, along with a sharp claw below.

Step 16: Complete the abdomen using a small curve behind the back leg and draw two small curves just before the middle leg.

Step 17: Draw horizontal stripes throughout its body from neck to the back.

Step 18: Add an inner long oval within the wing and include a line that runs horizontally within it.

Step 19: Add vein-like patterns inside the wing.

Step 20: Darken the eyes, leaving the bottom corners.

Step 21: A detailed praying mantis drawing is ready.
