How to Draw Sand Dunes – Easy Desert Landscape Drawing for Kids

This sand dunes drawing lesson gently introduces beginners to the flow and shape of desert landscapes. You start with simple guiding lines and gradually build soft, rolling dune forms that feel natural and calm, learning how curves and spacing create the illusion of wind-shaped sand. Each step is broken down visually, so kids and new artists can follow along without feeling overwhelmed. It also includes downloadable PDF worksheets you can print and practice anytime, making it easy to repeat the exercise and improve your sense of landscape drawing

How to draw Sand Dunes: step-by-step drawing instructions

Step 1: Draw a tall, long Cactus trunk that has a rounded top.

Step 3: Make small tufts of desert grass around the bottom of the Cactus.

Step 6: Make more rounded pads for the cactus's small size.

Step 7: Draw a curved line of sand across the middle of the ground.

Step 8: Include small stones and ground-related details.

Step 9: Create a grassy tuft of foliage behind the cactus's small size.

Step 10: Draw a long dune line on the background.

Step 11: A second dune should be added behind it with a long curving line.

Step 12: Create a second dune on the other side of the background.

Step 13: Include a third curved line of dune to complete the desert scene.

Step 14: Draw curved lines inside the dunes to reveal the sandy layers.

Step 15: Include more curved detail lines along the dunes that are not in use.

Step 16: Create long, vertical lines of texture over the cactus's height.

Step 17: Include tiny spines as well as small details in the prickly pear Cactus.

Step 18: Complete the drawing by confirming all lines before completing the scene of desert dunes.
