One stormy night, a frail old farmer was herding the animals into their sheds and locking up the barns. He wanted to make sure everyone, including himself, was safe before the storm hit.

He walked into the last barn to collect some wood for the fire indoors. But as he did so, a huge gust of wind came, which lashed hailstones down like rockets. There was no way the farmer could walk back to the farmhouse.

While the farmer sat waiting in the barn for the storm to calm, he heard a few footsteps. They slowly became louder and closer, until a large snout poked in the barn window.

“Hello, farmer,” a drenched cow mooed.
“Hello, cow,” the farmer replied.
“Please, sir, can I stick my head in the barn to keep it safe from the storm?”
Without a second thought, the farmer agreed. He wouldn’t want to be out in that weather himself.

But after a few moments, the cow mooed again.
“Please, sir, can I take a few steps into the barn to keep myself warm?”
Again, the farmer could not say no to this request, and the cow took a couple of steps in.
“Thank you kindly,” the cow exclaimed.

It wasn’t long before the cow asked again.
“Please, sir, could I take a few more steps in? My backside is getting wet.”
The space in the barn was beginning to get smaller and smaller, but the friendly farmer knew no human or animal should be out in that weather.

The cow was nearly all the way into the barn, squeezing the farmer up against the wall.
“Please, sir, could I come all the way in?”
The friendly farmer knew the cow only had his tail left, swinging outside the barn.
“Yes,” he agreed.

As the cow came fully into the barn, there was no room left for the farmer to fit in too.
The cow mooed a request once more.
“Please, sir, there is hardly any room in here for the both of us. As you are the smallest, I think you should find somewhere else?”

The friendly farmer sighed; he knew the cow was right, much to his dismay. With that agreed upon, the friendly farmer walked out into the storm.
The rain slashed down, making it difficult to see. The farmer was unable to navigate his way back home. He was left standing just outside the warm, dry barn he once occupied.

After some thought, the friendly farmer realised perhaps he had been too friendly. He deserved to be dry and warm, just like the cow. But his generosity meant he had forgotten about his own needs.

Inside the barn, the cow was enjoying a snack on the dry hay as he kept nice and warm. Suddenly, there was a knock on the barn door, and from outside, a voice called.
“Please, sir, can I come back in? I was nice enough to give you my space, but we both deserve to be safe from the storm.”

A moment passed before the cow mooed in agreement. There was a shuffle from inside the barn, and then the door was kicked open. The friendly farmer squeezed himself in and climbed on top of the cow.

“This is the only way we will both fit,” the farmer said.
Both the friendly farmer and cow chuckled together in agreement as they listened to the storm from inside the warm and dry barn.
