One bright morning, the cheerful Sunshine Circus arrived in a happy little town.
Its colourful tent, fluttering flags, and joyful music made everyone stop, smile, and hurry over to watch the wonderful show.
Behind the big circus tent, the performers were already practising for another exciting day.
Every morning, the Sunshine Circus woke to music.
Elephants stretched, monkeys swung, seals splashed, and clowns practised funny dances.
High above them stood Gerry, the tallest performer in the circus.
His long neck nearly reached the colourful flags.
Everyone liked Gerry, but he didn’t always like being so tall.
Every rehearsal seemed to bring a new little problem.
Bonk!
His head bumped the practice tent.
When he bowed to the audience...
His hat slipped right off.
When he walked past the juggling clubs...
His long neck accidentally knocked them over.
"Oh dear," sighed Gerry.
"I wish I were a little shorter."
The other performers smiled kindly.
"You are perfect just the way you are," they said.
But Gerry wasn't so sure.
One bright afternoon, the circus was almost ready for its biggest show.
Children filled every seat.
The band began to play.
The Ringmaster smiled.
"Welcome, everyone!"
Just then...
A strong breeze whooshed across the circus.
Up...
Up...
Up...
The beautiful rainbow circus flag came loose and flew to the very top of the tallest pole.
Everyone looked up.
The pole was far too high.
The monkeys climbed...
But they couldn't reach.
The elephants stretched...
Still too short.
The acrobats stacked themselves into a tall tower...
Wobble...
Wobble...
"Wheee!"
They quickly climbed back down.
The audience watched quietly.
Then the Ringmaster looked at Gerry.
"Gerry..."
"Would you like to try?"
Gerry blinked.
"Me?"
He slowly walked to the tall pole.
He stretched his long neck.
Just a little higher...
A little higher...
Got it!
With one gentle tug...
The rainbow flag floated free.
The wind caught it.
Whoosh!
The bright colours waved proudly above the circus once again.
The whole tent burst into cheers.
"Hooray for Gerry!"
The band played louder.
The children clapped.
Even the clowns did happy cartwheels.
Gerry smiled the biggest smile he had ever smiled.
For the first time...
He wasn't wishing to be shorter.
That evening, as the sun painted the sky orange and pink, Gerry looked up at the waving rainbow flag.
Sometimes...
The very thing that made him feel different...
Was the very thing the circus needed most.
From that day on, whenever Gerry walked beneath the colourful circus tent...
He stood tall with pride.
Not because he was the tallest giraffe...
But because he had learned that everyone has something wonderful that only they can do.
