Mia loves funny hats, but the silver-starred hat in Grandma’s attic is unlike any she has seen before. When it changes colour with every feeling, Mia begins to discover the quiet magic of noticing, listening, and helping hearts feel lighter.

Six-year-old Mia loved funny hats—sunhats, winter hats, party hats and even a pirate hat.
One Saturday at Grandma’s house, she found a soft, round hat covered in silver stars inside an attic box.
“What a beautiful hat!” Mia said.
“That hat is very special,” Grandma smiled.
“What does it do?”
“You’ll find out when you wear it.”

Mia placed the hat on her head.
It began to glow and turned bright yellow.
“Why did it change colour?” she asked.
“Yellow means you’re happy,” Grandma explained.
Mia giggled. “I am happy!”
The magical hat really worked!

That afternoon, Mia wore the hat into the garden.
She met her friend Ben, who was sitting quietly on a bench.
As soon as Ben tried on the hat, it turned a soft blue.
"What does blue mean?" Mia asked.

Grandmother smiled.
"It means someone is feeling sad."
Ben looked down.
"I lost my favourite toy this morning," he said quietly, "I didn't want to tell anyone."
Mia sat beside him.
"I'm sorry, Ben," she said kindly.
"Let's look for it together."
Ben smiled a little.

After searching under bushes, behind flowers, and beside the swing, they found the little toy car hiding beneath a garden bench.
Ben hugged Mia.
"I'm happy again!"
The hat slowly changed from blue to bright yellow.
"Look!" Ben laughed.
"It changed!"

The next day, Mia visited her cousin Lily.
When Lily wore the magical hat, it turned bright red.
"Oh!" Mia said.
"What does red mean?"
Grandmother smiled gently.
"Red means someone feels angry."

Lily folded her arms.
"My little brother knocked over my puzzle."
"I worked on it all morning."
Instead of becoming upset, Mia listened carefully.

"That must have felt disappointing."
Lily nodded. "It did."
Together they helped rebuild the puzzle.
Soon the hat slowly became green.
"What does green mean?" Lily asked.
"It means you're feeling calm again," Grandmother explained.

A few days later, Mia's little brother Sam wanted to wear the magical hat.
As soon as he placed it on his head, it turned purple.
"What does purple mean?" Mia asked.
"It means someone feels worried," Grandmother replied.
Sam took a deep breath.

"I'm scared about my first swimming lesson tomorrow."
Mia smiled.
"I felt nervous before my first lesson too."
"But once I got into the water, it became fun."
Sam smiled.
"Really?"
"Really."
The purple slowly faded into cheerful yellow.

Every day, the magical hat helped Mia understand someone a little better.
Sometimes it turned blue.
Sometimes red.
Sometimes purple.
Sometimes bright yellow.
But after people shared how they felt, the colours often became brighter and happier.
One evening, Mia asked Grandmother,
"Does everyone need the magical hat to understand feelings?"

Grandmother smiled and gently shook her head.
"The hat doesn't create feelings," she said.
"It simply reminds us to notice them."
"The most magical thing isn't the hat."
"It's listening with a kind heart."
Mia thought about Ben, Lily, and Sam.
She realised that whenever someone talked about their feelings, they felt lighter inside.

Soon, Mia no longer needed the magical hat.
She learned to notice when others seemed worried and ask, “Are you okay?” or “Would you like to talk?”
Sometimes, all someone needed was a kind listener.
The hat stayed safely in Grandma’s wooden box, but Mia carried its lesson every day—kindness and understanding made hearts lighter and friendships stronger.
Moral: Understanding feelings helps us become better friends. Talking about our feelings and listening with kindness makes everyone happier.
