One bright spring morning, the little Forest Train stood waiting at the station.
Its front coaches were shiny and bright with big sparkling windows.
"Oh, I want to sit there!" chirped Penny Parrot.
"So do I!" laughed Benny Bear.
"Me too!" squeaked Millie Mouse.
Soon all the little animals hurried towards the front of the train.
But there were not enough seats for everyone.
At the very back was an old wooden carriage.
Its paint was faded.
Its seats were simple.
Nobody wanted to sit there.
"Oh no," sighed Ollie Rabbit.
"It's the last carriage," mumbled Daisy Deer.
"It doesn't look special," whispered Freddie Fox.
With little smiles, they climbed aboard anyway.
"Choo... choo!"
The Forest Train puffed gently through the green countryside.
At first, the animals in the last carriage looked out quietly.
Then something wonderful happened.
Splash!
A sparkling waterfall tumbled down the rocks beside the tracks.
"Look!" cried Ollie.
"It’s beautiful!"
The train rolled on.
Suddenly it entered a glowing rainbow tunnel.
Soft colours danced across the windows.
"Wow!" laughed Daisy.
"It looks like magic!"
Farther along, a tiny baby deer peeked from the tall grass and happily wagged its tail.
The friends waved.
The little deer waved back.
As evening came, tiny fireflies twinkled all around the last carriage like little stars.
Then the train stopped at a tiny forest station.
Friendly squirrels, hedgehogs and birds stood waving with cheerful smiles.
The animals in the last carriage waved back happily.
"What a wonderful journey!" smiled Freddie.
When the train finally reached home, the animals from the front coaches ran over.
"What did you see?" they asked.
The friends smiled and told them about the waterfall, the rainbow tunnel, the baby deer, the glowing fireflies and the tiny forest station.
Everyone listened with wide eyes.
"We wish we had travelled in the last carriage too!" they said.
From that day on, no one rushed to the shiny front coaches anymore.
Sometimes the happiest adventures were waiting in the little wooden carriage at the very end.
