Nora liked to sleep with her window open.
She enjoyed the rustling leaves, the hooting owls and the soft night wind.
But one winter night, she heard a strange sound from the garden.
Snip… pull… stitch…
Nora wrapped herself in a blanket and tiptoed outside.

Behind the apple tree sat a tiny man on a wooden spool.
He wore a blue coat with many pockets and a silver thimble for a hat.
In front of him floated a pale ribbon that sparkled in the moonlight.
“What are you doing?” Nora whispered.

The tiny man jumped.
“I’m Pipkin, the wind’s secret tailor,” he said.
“The wind needs a tailor?” Nora asked.
“Under moonlight, wind looks like cloth. When chimneys or branches tear it, I mend it with silver thread.”
Stitch… stitch… stitch…
Pipkin closed the hole, and the ribbon fluttered happily.

Suddenly, a loud sound filled the sky.
Rrrrrrip!
A freezing gust swept through the garden. In the moonlight, an enormous white ribbon appeared, torn in two.
“The North Wind has ripped!” cried Pipkin.
“What will happen?” Nora asked.
“Winter will be trapped here.”
Frost spread across the ground as snow piled against the gate.

“And the other side of the world?” Nora asked.
“It will have no winter. The ground cannot rest, and the animals will become confused,” Pipkin replied.
“Can we fix it?”
“We need three rare things: a freely given feather, a brave promise and a remembered song.”
“I’ll help you,” Nora promised. “You won’t face this alone.”

A golden spark appeared above her heart and floated into Pipkin’s empty spool.
“The brave promise!” he cried.
“We have found the first thing.”
They hurried into the snowy woods. On a low branch sat an old grey owl.

“We need a freely given feather to mend the North Wind,” Nora explained.
Seeing the freezing forest, the owl gently offered one from his wing.
“No creature should face an endless winter.”
The feather turned silver in Nora’s hand.
“Now we need a remembered song,” said Pipkin.

Nora tried a counting song and a silly frog song, but nothing happened.
“It must be a song the wind hasn’t heard for years,” Pipkin explained.
Nora closed her eyes and remembered a gentle song Grandma once sang while rain tapped on the window.

At first, Nora remembered only a few notes. Then the whole tune returned.
She began to sing.
It was a song about clouds sailing home and stars watching over sleeping children. The melody rose into the air as a curling line of golden light.
“We have everything!” Pipkin cheered.

He placed the owl’s feather, Nora’s promise and the remembered song beside his spinning wheel.
Round and round it turned.
The feather made the thread soft.
The promise made it strong. The song gave it the power to travel through the sky.
Soon, Pipkin held a shining silver thread.

A flock of geese heard Nora’s song and landed beside them.
“We will carry you to the North Wind,” said the oldest goose.
Nora and Pipkin climbed onto their backs. The geese flew higher and higher until they reached the enormous tear.

Nora held one side of the wind.
The geese gripped the other side with their beaks, while the owl held the spool below.
Pipkin began to sew.

“Pull!” called Nora.
“Hold!” cried Pipkin.
“Stitch!” honked the geese.
Working together, they slowly closed the tear.

Pipkin made the final stitch, leaving a silver seam across the sky. Feathers sparkled, golden notes danced and Nora’s promise shone like a star.
The North Wind roared happily and carried winter around the world.
Whenever moonlight filled her room, Nora searched for the shining seam and sometimes heard Pipkin outside.
Snip… pull… stitch…
