One breezy morning, a red-and-yellow striped sock blows away from the washing line and lands in the garden next door. Soon, it becomes a puppy’s funny hat, a toy boat’s cheerful flag, and even a helpful berry bag for a robin. What begins as a scary tumble turns into a day full of surprises, new friends, and little acts of usefulness.

One breezy morning, Mum hung shirts, towels, trousers and a pair of red-and-yellow striped socks on the washing line.
The socks swung together in the wind.
“This is fun!” cried one.
“Hold on tight!” called the other.
They danced back and forth as the shirts flapped and the towels waved.

Suddenly, a strong gust rushed over the garden wall.
Whoosh!
One of the pegs sprang loose.
The little striped sock flew off the line.
“Wait for me!” cried the other sock.
But the wind carried its friend higher.
The sock sailed above the flower beds, spun around the apple tree and floated into the garden next door.

Down it fell—right onto Pickle the puppy’s head.
The sock covered one eye, and Pickle raced around the garden. He bumped into a watering can, rolled across the grass and tumbled onto his back.
The sock fell beside him.
Pickle stared at it.

Then his tail began to wag.
He picked up the sock and proudly carried it to a little girl named Nia, who was playing beside a small garden pond.
“What have you found?” Nia asked.

Pickle dropped the sock at her feet.
Nia picked it up and smiled. “It looks like a tiny windsock!”
Beside the pond floated Nia’s toy boat. It had a wooden mast, but its paper flag had fallen off.

“I know!” she said.
Nia carefully tied the striped sock to the mast.
The toy boat sailed across the pond with the sock fluttering above it like a cheerful flag.
The little sock had never been on a boat before.

It watched silver fish flash beneath the water. It passed round lily pads and a frog resting in the sunshine.
“This is much more exciting than hanging on a washing line!” thought the sock.
But then another gust swept across the pond.

The sock slipped from the mast and flew into a raspberry bush.
A robin was hopping beneath the leaves. She was collecting berries for her hungry chicks.
The sock landed open beside her.
The robin tilted her head.
“What a useful little bag!” she chirped.

She dropped some ripe berries inside it. Then she held the edge of the sock in her beak and flew towards her nest.
The berries were soft and juicy.
Red marks appeared on the sock’s bright stripes.
At the nest, the robin shared the berries with her chicks.
“Thank you, little bag,” she chirped.

Just then, the wind lifted the empty sock again.
Over the hedge it flew.
Past the apple tree it spun.
Across the flower beds it tumbled.
At last, it dropped into its own back garden.
The sock landed beneath the washing line, right beside Mum’s basket.

Its matching sock was still hanging above.
“You came back!” it cried happily.
“You won’t believe where I’ve been!” said the little sock.
“I was a puppy’s hat, a flag on a boat and a berry bag for a robin!”

Mum found the striped sock on the grass.
“You’re covered in mud, pond water and berry stains,” she said.
The sock worried she might be cross, but Mum smiled. “You’ve had quite a day.”
She washed it and hung it beside its partner. Its colours had faded, and a tiny berry stain remained near the toe.
