Maya and Kabir were cousins, but they lived in very different places.

Maya lived in the countryside, surrounded by fields, ponds and birds.

Kabir lived in a busy city filled with tall buildings, crowded roads and bright lights.

Every evening, Mother Bee reminded Buzzy to return before dark and avoid the lotus flowers after sunset.

One summer, the cousins planned to visit each other.

Maya visited Kabir first.

As they entered the city, she stared through the car window.

Cars moved everywhere. Buses rumbled past, people hurried along the pavements, and colourful shops filled the streets.

“It’s so busy!” Maya said.

Kabir smiled. “That’s what makes it exciting.”

Maya’s eyes grew wider.

“How does anyone know where to go?” she asked.

Kabir laughed.

“You’ll learn. Come on. The city has surprises everywhere!”

The next morning, Kabir took her on the metro.

When the train rushed into the station, Maya stepped back in surprise.

“It goes underground?” she asked.

Kabir nodded proudly.

“And sometimes above the roads too!”

They spent the day exploring the city. Maya saw street musicians, busy markets, and a huge library. She even rode an escalator for the first time.

“So many people are doing so many things!” She said.

Kabir nodded.

“That’s what I like about the city. Something is always happening.”

Later, Kabir showed her the rooftop garden of his apartment building.

Maya was surprised to see tomatoes, spinach and flowers growing high above the city streets.

“You have a garden here too!”

“Just a little higher than yours,” Kabir laughed.

Suddenly, dark clouds gathered and a strong wind swept across the rooftop.

One of the plant pots began to slide.

“My tomato plant!” Kabir cried.

The cousins quickly caught the pot and helped the neighbours move the smaller plants to safety.

Soon the rain began.

Everyone hurried together, helping one another until all the plants were safe.

Kabir’s neighbour handed them two warm cups of milk.

“You two make a good rescue team,” she said.

Maya looked around at everyone laughing together.

She had always imagined the city as a place full of strangers. Now she saw that neighbours cared for each other here too.

That evening, the cousins looked down from the rooftop.

Hundreds of lights shone across the city.

“They look like stars below us,” Maya said.

Maya had never seen a night like this.

The city was noisy, crowded and busy.

But it was also full of energy, friendship and surprises.

“I think I understand why you love it here,” Maya said.

Kabir grinned.

“Now it’s my turn to visit your world.”

A few days later, Kabir arrived at Maya’s house.

When he arrived in the countryside, the first thing he noticed was the quiet.

There were no horns or trains.

He could hear birds, wind in the trees and insects near the pond.

Kabir whispered, “It’s so quiet.”

Maya laughed.

“Wait until the rooster wakes you tomorrow morning.”

Kabir soon discovered that countryside mornings were not always quiet.

At sunrise—

“COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!”

Kabir nearly jumped out of bed.

Maya laughed from the doorway.

Kabir sat up in surprise.

Maya laughed. “Good morning, city boy! Not so quiet now, is it?”

After breakfast, she handed him a pair of old boots.

“Where are we going?”

“Exploring.”

That was enough for Kabir.

Maya led him along a narrow path between tall green plants.

Kabir watched butterflies, dragonflies and birds.

He helped Maya’s grandpa pull carrots from the garden.

One carrot came out so suddenly that Kabir fell backwards onto the grass.

Maya burst out laughing.

“I meant to do that,” Kabir said, holding up the carrot.

Later, they heard a goat calling nearby.

“Maaaa!”

Maya looked around.

“That’s Chutki!”

They found the little goat outside her gate, close to a muddy ditch.

“Don’t chase her,” Maya said. “She might run away.”

Kabir thought for a moment.

He remembered seeing Grandpa feed the goats some leaves that morning.

Kabir picked some fresh leaves and held them out.

“Come on, Chutki.”

The goat slowly walked towards him.

While Kabir kept her attention, Maya guided her safely through the gate.

“We make a good rescue team,” Kabir said.

That night, Grandpa took them outside.

Kabir looked up and became silent.

The sky was filled with stars.

“I’ve never seen so many,” he whispered.

Maya smiled. “That’s one of my favourite things about living here.”

The next day, the cousins sat beneath a tree.

“The countryside isn’t boring at all,” Kabir said. “There’s always something to discover.”

“And the city isn’t only noisy,” Maya replied. “There are so many interesting things to see and people helping each other.”

Kabir smiled.

The cousins realised that their homes did not need to be the same as being special.

The city was busy and bright.

The countryside was peaceful and green.

Each had something different to enjoy, discover and love.

And from then on, Maya and Kabir looked forward to visiting both homes and finding a new adventure each time.

Moral: Different places have different joys. When we explore and understand them, we learn to appreciate beauty in every way of living.
