Billy loved gymnastics.
This year, he was finally going to be old enough to try out for the school's gymnastics team.
He knew it was hard to get a spot on the team. You had to be really, really good.

There was a set routine that they all had to do at tryouts.
Billy was great at most of it.
But there was just one flip, and he could not seem to land. No matter how hard he tried, Billy always seemed to lose his balance.

Billy would practice at any chance he could get. Whether day or not, rain or shine, Billy was practising.
He’d practice in the living room (much to his mum’s dismay).
He’d practice in the garden.
He’d even practice in shops, parks, and on the school playground.

The try-outs were getting closer, and this made Billy even more worried.
One day, he was practising on the field outside his house.
“Jump, flip, land,” he repeated to himself.
But each time he tried to do it, Billy ended up on his bottom.

After hours of practice, Billy had had enough.
“I give up,” he shouted, disheartened.
Billy walked to the nearby stream and began to throw stones into the water with frustration.

With each stone thrown, the water would splash. But even after Billy stopped throwing stones, he could still hear the splashes.
Billy looked around to see where the noise was coming from.
Suddenly, he saw a frantic- looking squirrel running in and out of the water.

Billy wandered over to the squirrel, curiously.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
The squirrel seemed to understand Billy. She pointed up to the tree branch that hung above the water. Then she pointed into the water before using her small arms to try and scoop out the water.

It took a moment for Billy to piece it together, but he got it in the end.
“Your babies have fallen out of the tree and into the water?” he asked, and the squirrel nodded eagerly.
“And you’re trying to take the water out of the stream to save them?”
The squirrel nodded again, then quickly went back to trying to scoop out the water.

Without a second thought, Billy kicked off his shoes and stepped into the stream.
He looked all around for the baby squirrels.
Finally, he saw one hanging onto a small twig and another clutched to a rock.
Billy quickly ran over and scooped them out of the water.

After bringing the two baby squirrels to safety, the squirrel mother was full of relief.
She checked them over and squeezed them so tightly, glad they were back in her arms.
Then she came over to Billy and shook one of his fingers to say thank you.

Once the squirrel family had left, Billy sat and thought.
It would have been impossible for the squirrel to drain the river, but nevertheless, she never gave up.
Billy was in awe of her determination to get her babies back.
“You have to stay motivated for the things you want, even if it seems impossible,” Billy whispered.

Billy walked back to the field, still thinking about the squirrels.
“Just try one more time.” Billy said, “Jump, flip, land.”
Billy ran, jumped, and flipped…

And landed perfectly. Balancing on his feet.
Billy could not believe it! He ran straight home to tell his family everything that had happened.
And a week later, Billy was the newest member of the gymnastics team.
