In the hot, sandy desert, lived a caravan of camels and their owners.

Each camel would help its owner carry things across the sand.

But there was one camel who wanted to help all of the owners.

“Carl, can you take my load today?” The camels would ask Carl, the people- pleasing camel.

“Of course,” Carl would always say in response.

So Carl would carry his load across the burning sand and under the blistering sun, then return to carry his fellow camels' loads too.

After long days, Carl would fall asleep exhausted under the cool, breezy night sky.

But once the sun rose again the next morning, Carl was out again.

From morning to night, light to dark, Carl was carrying loads after loads for his camel friends and their owners.

One day, Carl’s owner asked, “Why do you always do so much extra work?”

“I like making others happy,” Carl replied.

But his owner did not like Carl always being on the go.

“Tomorrow, you will take a day off to rest and relax. No carrying anything; just enjoy the sun and make sure to eat lots of yummy food.”

Carl nodded in agreement.

The next day, Carl did not rise with the sun like he usually would. He took his time to wake up in the morning. He slowly moved around the site, casually greeting his friends.

Before Carl could even take the first bite of his green, juicy grass, another camel came to ask for help.

“Please, Carl!” he insisted.

Well, I’m supposed to be relaxing today, but I guess one round wouldn’t hurt,” Carl replied.

And so Carl was off, across the burning sand and under the blistering sun, once again.

As Carl was just returning, Crystal, the camel, asked Carl to help her move some stock.

Of course, Carl agreed.

Before Carl had even finished the task with Crystal, Ali, a camel owner, came rushing over.

“Carl, please help me today; my camel is too ill to take her load.”

Even though Carl was starting to feel funny, he agreed to carry the load.

As Carl walked again across the burning sand and under the blistering sun, he started to slow.

Something wasn’t right.

As soon as Carl made it back to the site, he collapsed onto the floor.

All the other camels and their owners came rushing over to help.

“Carl, are you okay?”

The owners sat Carl up and gave him some water and his dish of juicy green grass.

Carl’s owner led him into his stall to relax for the rest of the day.

“I thought I asked you not to work today?” his owner said.

Carl knew he should have listened to his owner.

“You took on so much work trying to please everyone that you forgot to please yourself.”

Carl apologised, but his owner told him not to be silly.

“You need to be careful, Carl!”

Carl agreed. After a few days of resting, eating good food, and making sure he was well hydrated, Carl got back to work.

But this time, Carl made sure to take care of himself before talking care of others.
