Clair had plenty of friends, but something didn’t feel right. They laughed and played when things were fun, yet disappeared when she needed support the most. With her mother’s wise advice, Clair learns what true friendship really means—kindness, care, and being there through both happy and difficult times. This free illustrated kids’ book gently teaches children about setting boundaries, recognising healthy relationships, and discovering that real friends are the ones who truly listen and care.

Clair was always super popular. She had tonnes of friends that would come to play with her at school and talk to her on the phone, but sometimes it didn’t always feel like the other kids were really her friends.

Whenever Clair needed help or someone to reach out to, nobody wanted to be there for her. When she asked why, the kids all said that it was boring or they were busy, but whenever Clair wanted to do something fun or exciting, she had a line of people who wanted to hang out with her.

Clair didn’t understand why her friends didn’t care about the things she was going through, so one day she asked her mother what to do. Clair’s mother was always there, regardless of how fun or boring something was.
Her mother cared about what was going on in her life and was the best at giving advice to Clair. When Clair explained the situation, her mother listened patiently and never interrupted Clair, no matter how long she rambled on.

" Mom, my friends don't ever want to help me or listen to me when I talk about something serious. Like when Uncle Jack was sick, I was really scared, but I didn’t want to worry you more, so I tried to talk to my friend Anna. She just shrugged at me and said everybody has time to go to heaven.
I really needed her. I needed her to be there for me and reassure me that everything was going to be okay, but she didn’t care. Or when I wanted to talk about how girls are paid less, my friend Ruby just said, ‘That is just how things are’.
Or when I was on the monkey bars the other day and I fell off. All of my friends were excited for the monkey bars and pushed me to go on them, but when I fell, nobody came to help me up or ask if I was alright. Is this normal? Am I just being too sensitive?”
The entire time Clair talked, her mother sat there listening and thinking of the best way to break some harsh news to Clair. When Clair finished speaking, her mother began to give her some much-needed advice.

“Clair, those are not real friends. Real friends are there for you in every situation, not just when it’s fun or when it’s convenient. It is not normal for people who you consider friends to not comfort you when you are sad or help you when you fall. You have every right to be upset. Friends talk about serious things, and personal issues, and fun stuff, not just one of those categories. I think you need to talk to the people you call friends, set boundaries with them, and let them know that being there for you and each other is part of what friendship is.”

Clair trusted her mother and the advice that she gave, so the next day she went and gathered all of her friends. Once all of them were together, Clair explained what had been going on recently, her feelings, and her new boundaries.
She explained that from now on she needs her friends to be able to be serious and supportive of her and each other, and that she would like for all of them to be kind to one another.
Some of her friends listened closely and agreed with her, and others got annoyed and left, and Clair was okay with that. The people that stayed all apologised and promised they would try to be more caring in the future, and Clair was happy that finally she could call the people she hung out with true friends.
