THE YES DAY | Free Children Book

When Ellis hears about a “yes day,” he can hardly believe it—his mum has to say yes to everything he asks! Pancakes, toys, and park adventures quickly fill the day, but Ellis soon realises that the best moments aren’t about things at all. They’re about laughter, love, and time spent together. This free illustrated kids’ book is a joyful celebration of empathy, emotional growth, and the simple magic of family fun.

It was the middle of the summer holidays. Ellis had to find something fun to do every day while his Mum worked hard, hidden away in her office.

But as the days went on, Ellis began to run out of ways to keep himself busy.

“I’m bored,” he moaned to his Mum one sunny afternoon.

“I know you are, Ellis,” Mum replied with a sigh. “How about tomorrow? I take the day off work, and we have a ‘yes’ day?”

Ellis looked puzzled. “What is a ‘yes day’?”

“Wait until tomorrow, and you will find out…”

Ellis struggled to fall asleep, thinking of the exciting day ahead. Finally, he had something to look forward to.

The very next morning, Ellis sprung out of bed like a bunny and hopped downstairs to see his Mum waiting with a wide smile.

“Good morning! Today we are going to have a ‘yes day’, which means I have to say yes to everything and anything you want”.

Ellis bounced around with excitement.

“Can we have pancakes for breakfast?”

“Yes!” Mum replied.

The pair sang and danced along as they whipped up some sweet pancakes together.

When breakfast was all cleaned up, Ellis thought about what he wanted to do next.

“Can we go out? Can we go to the park? And to the shop? And...and…”

Mum laughed at Ellis’ eagerness.

Yes, we can do those things; let's get ready.” The pair rushed to get dressed and headed out of the door, ready for a day full of fun.

“Can we go to the park first?” Ellis asked.

“Yes”.

“And can we get ice cream?”

“Yes”.

So that is what they did. Ellis played in the sandpit, on the slide, and on the swings. Then they brought ice cream, and Mum giggled away as Ellis dripped strawberry sauce and sprinkles all over himself.

“Can we go to the shop now?” Ellis asked.

“Yes,” Mum replied.

As they walked across the road, they passed a pop-up ice skating rink.

Mum’s eyes lit up as she watched skaters gliding and twirling around.

“This looks fun, Ellis! Do you want to try it?” Mum asked.

But Ellis just shrugged his shoulders and said, “Meh, not really.”

Mum gave a small smile, and they continued on to the shop.

Soon, they arrived at a huge toy store. All around, Ellis could see bikes, dolls, cars, and teddy bears. It was like being in a dream.

Ellis ran inside and began filling a trolley with lots of new things. Each time, he waited for his Mum to say “yes.”

Ellis and his Mum spent ages trying out the latest gadgets and testing the newest tech. Ellis wanted to make sure he was getting all of the best stuff.

He was so happy with all of his choices, but then he noticed his Mum didn’t seem to be having such a good time.

Mum made sure to smile and agree to all of Ellis’ choices. She seemed happy just to see him happy, but there was something that was not quite right.

Ellis looked at his mountain of new things in the trolley and thought, ‘All of these toys are cool, but spending this time with my Mum is the best’.

Without another word, Ellis left the trolley and took his Mum’s hand. He led her out of the shop and back down the street.

“Ellis, what are you doing? What about your new things?” Mum asked.

Soon they were back in the park and at the gates of the pop-up ice rink.

“Mum, do you want to go ice skating?” Ellis asked.

“Yes, I would like…” Mum began to reply, but Ellis had already darted off to the ticket booth.

It wasn’t long before the pair had their skates on and were gliding together across the cold ice. They spun around and tried new tricks, laughing when one would fall over.

Mum looked so happy, and Ellis did too. They skated hand in hand until the sun had set and the rink was about to close.

“Ellis, you didn’t have to go ice-skating with me, we could have brought those toys instead.” Mum said, as they left the park in search of somewhere to eat dinner.

“I know,” Ellis replied, “but spending time together is much better than any of those things.”

Both of their smiles beamed as brightly as the moon above.

“Thank you, Ellis! Did you have a good day?” Mum said.

“Yes, and did you have a good day?”

Yes,” Mum replied, “the best day ever.”
