How to Draw a Cowboy Hat Step-by-step – Easy Western Hat Drawing for Kids

This cowboy hat drawing lesson takes a classic western icon and breaks it down into an easy, step-by-step sketching experience. The visual guide helps learners start with simple curved shapes, then gradually build the wide brim, raised sides, and signature crown indentation that gives the hat its character. It’s a fun, confidence-building activity for kids who enjoy drawing characters, costumes, or western-themed scenes. Printable PDF worksheets are included, giving plenty of space to practice, retrace, and refine each step until the cowboy hat looks bold, balanced, and full of personality.

Curved brims and tall hat shapes come together as kids design a classic cowboy hat using simple drawing steps.

Step 1: Draw a wide curve like an oversized word "C" for the right side of the brim of your hat.

Step 2: Continue drawing the brim by making a wide curve to the left, ending with a slight curl.

Step 3: Draw a second bent line halfway along the first line of the brim to make the brim look thicker and more folded.

Step 4: Create a long, curved line between the brim, revealing the folds on the front of the cowboy's hat as shown in the image.

Step 5: Draw the crown of the cap above the brim, with slightly curved sides and a slight dip towards the top.

Step 6: Create an angled line along the left edge of the brim to complete the roll's edge.

Step 7: Draw a tiny curving fold on the right-hand side of your crown of the hat.

Step 8: Create a small circle at the center of the band, the principal badge.

Step 9: Draw two curving lines across the top of your hat just inside the space you have created earlier, to make the band of the hat.

Step 10: Draw two small circles on either side of the principal badge.

Step 11: Draw a star in the centre of the badge.

Step 12: Complete the cowboy's hat by reviewing the outline and adding any last-minute details. Now color the hat using your favourite shades.
