Mr. and Mrs. Elephant lived in the jungle, surrounded by leaves and trees.

When their little baby was born, Mr and Mrs Elephant couldn’t have been happier.

But soon, Mr Elephant began to worry. All the other animals had special homes just for them. Snakes lived in trees, frogs lived in ponds, and bears lived in caves.

But where were elephants supposed to live?

He needed to find a special house just for his elephant family to live in.

So off they went to find the perfect house.

As they walked along the path, they came across a rabbit.

“What are you doing, elephants?” asked the rabbit, hopping up to greet them.

“We’re looking for a new house, just for us,” said Mrs Elephant

“Well, look no further,” said the rabbit. “Why don’t you move in with us? It’s the perfect home!”

“Hmmm,” said the elephants, looking around. “It might be just a bit… not for us.”

So off they set again to find the perfect house.

After a while, they encountered a woodpecker.

“What are you doing, elephants?” asked the woodpecker, pecking a hole in the tree.

“We’re looking for a house, just for us,” said Mr Elephant.

“You can live with me!” said the woodpecker, moving aside to show them its nest in the tree.

“Ummm,” said the elephants. “It’s lovely, but perhaps it’s too…It’s just not for us!”

And off they went once more, to find their perfect house.

Suddenly, they came across a tortoise walking slowly in front of them.

“What are you doing, elephants?” asked the tortoise, very slowly.

“We’re looking for a house, just for us,” said Mr and Mrs Elephant together.

The tortoise pulled his head into his shell, and they heard his voice echo out.

“Live in here with me. It’s lovely and safe!” he said.

The elephants peered inside.

“It’s very nice,” said Mr Elephant. “But… it’s just… it’s just…”

“It’s just not for us,” said Mrs Elephant.

And so the elephants continued down the path.

Mr Elephant was feeling a little sad. He just didn’t know what to do.

How did everyone else find a house that was just for them?

He didn’t know if they would ever find somewhere to live.

But then he suddenly noticed…

Baby Elephant had disappeared!

He looked all around him and saw a little tail going into a bush. Mr and Mrs Elephant ran after him.

They chased him past the tortoise, who was sleeping inside his shell.

They chased him past the woodpecker, who was still pecking.

They chased him over the rabbit warren, being careful not to step in any of the holes!

Until they saw that he had stopped…

At their home in the jungle, surrounded by trees and leaves.

And Baby Elephant curled up on the nice, soft leaves the ground, where Mr and Mrs Elephant slept.

With a smile, Mr and Mrs Elephant sighed, looked into each other’s eyes, and realized…

Their special place was wherever they could all be together.

This home was just for them, and it had been all along.
