It was a week before her birthday when Susie walked in the kitchen and sat down to eat breakfast.
But as she was eating her cereal, she noticed something that she hadn’t noticed before.

There was a door in the kitchen that she’d never noticed. Was it a different colour? Was it brand-new?
“Daddy!” she called, and her dad rushed in. “Daddy, what is this door for?”
“It’s probably a door to a brand-new workshop, where there will be loads of tools and gadgets for me to work with!” he said, his eyes wide with wonder.
Then Susie’s big brother, Callum, walked in.

“Callum,” said Susie. “What is this door for?”
Callum stroked his chin too. He had no idea either.
“It’s probably a door to a music studio, where I can play guitar as loud as I want!” he said, sounding very excited.

Then Susie’s dog, Lily, walked in to see what all the fuss was about.
As soon as Lily looked at the door, Susie saw her tongue hang out of her mouth, and she knew Lily was dreaming of a room full of bones and treats.

Just then, the postwoman knocked on the front door, and Susie opened it up to greet her.
When the postwoman saw everyone looking at the door, she asked what was behind it.
“We just don’t know!” everyone replied.

The postwoman stroked her chin and wondered.
“It’s probably a door to a post office, where all the letters are organized, and everything is in the right place!”
She sighed and chuckled to herself.

“A post office? No, no, no,” said Susie’s dad. “It’s definitely a workshop.”
“A workshop?” said Callum. “I’m sure it must be a music studio.”
Lily barked, jumping up and down and thinking of bones.

It seemed like everyone had a different idea of what could be behind the secret door in Susie’s kitchen.
But Susie had another idea.
While everyone was talking over each other…

Susie tiptoed across the room.
She went past the postwoman and past her dog, Lily.
She squeezed between her dad, and her brother.
And she walked towards the door.

While everyone was still talking about what they thought was behind it, Susie reached up and grabbed the handle.
Opening it up, Susie’s eyes grew wide, and her mouth fell open.
In this room were a candy floss maker, a disco ball, and all of Susie’s best friends!
This room was full of EVERYTHING SHE LOVED!

Susie turned around and looked at everyone in the kitchen, but now, instead of talking to each other, they were all smiling at Susie.

Her dad was holding a toy he had made for her out of wood. Callum was holding a guitar, ready to sing her a song, and the postwoman had an armful of cards for her.
Even Lily had a bone that she’d found just for Susie!

“Happy birthday!” everyone said. “We knew it would be a surprise if your party was a week early!”
Susie was very surprised! But then she wondered…
“What about all the things you wanted to be behind the door? Aren’t you disappointed?”

Her daddy, Callum, Lily, and even the postwoman all smiled and said,
“So long as you’re there, then that’s all we could ever want!”
Then, laughing and cheering, they all went through the door together.
