Eliza had always thought fish were the most important animal in the sea,
They can be a healthy dinner, a medicine to make you better, or a pet for all your friends to see.
But one day, when Eliza and her family were on a sunny summer holiday,
They decided to take a boat trip out to the ocean and away from the bay.

It didn’t take long before the boat was surrounded by all the blue.
Glistening and sparkling in a turquoise, aquamarine, and sapphire hue.
It was so peaceful and quiet, floating on the waves, just them and the sea.
Until Eliza shouted “Look”, in a surprised burst of glee.

Every passenger on the boat looked in the direction of Eliza’s finger.
And just on the horizon, splashing tails and fins were beginning to linger.
Gasps and whispers could be heard from everyone around.
“What are they?” Eliza asked the tour guide to turn over all of the sound.

“They are whales,” the tour guide answered, “the most important animal in the sea.”
“Really?” the crowd questioned, who, like Eliza, thought fish were the best there could be.
The tour guide gave everyone a pair of binoculars to gaze at the whales.
They could see the grey and blue giants leaving misty sprays and trails.

Once all the excitement started to fade, the tour guide started to explain.
She began to tell Eliza and the other passengers the importance of whales again.
“As the biggest animal on this Earth, they are also the biggest fighters against global warming.”
A few people oohed and ahhed at the tour guide’s information.

“But it is their poop that is the most useful of all.”
This caused giggles among the adults and the children.
“You see…” the tour guide continued, “whales poop out tiny plants.”
“These plants are called phytoplankton, and they’re smaller than ants.”

“To the ocean's surface, they rise, absorbing lots of the carbon from the skies.”
“Carbon is not good for the planet, for animals, for you, or for me.”
“Its heat is melting ice caps and burning down our trees.”

“So these wonderful tiny plants take it all in, then travel back down to the deep, where they dispose of it, quite like a bin.”
“And like all plants, they produce good gas too; they give out oxygen to me and to you.”

“We call whales the ‘gardeners of the sea’ so it’s very important we leave their habitats be”.
Everyone was in awe of the whale's amazing role.
The passengers were speechless, not a single sound from a single soul.

All except Eliza, who slowly raised her hand,
“How can we help the sea when we live on land?”
The tour guide smiled widely and said, “I’m so glad you asked.”
“We don’t have much time left to save our seas, so we must act fast.”

“So here are some tips that are quite easy to do.”
“Firstly, we need to stop littering and dumping it into the blue.”
“Next, we have to use less plastic or start to reuse.”
“And we must stop keeping whales captive, as that’s part of the abuse.”

“Now, when you leave here today, I’d like you to start raising awareness through the kindness of your heart.”

And that’s exactly what they all did.
Eliza and her family went home to tell their friends.
They stopped eating fish and helped the beach cleanse.

Who knew that a whale's poop could help save our earth?
But now that you do, you can help too.
For what it is worth.
