Julian is so excited.
He is going to the park today!
Mother said they would walk, and she would lead the way.
“When we walk along the road,”
“There are things we must not forget,”
“They will keep us safe and away from any threat.”
Julian put on his coat,
While Mother put his sister in the pushchair.
Then up the road they went, making sure to take lots of care.
Julian began to run ahead,
But Mother started to shout.
“Remember what I said we do when we are out and about.”

Julian waited for his Mother,
“Why do we need to be safe near cars?” He asked.
Mother replied with a memory of when a car passed by too fast.
“When I was little like Izzy and you,”
“I would always play by the pavement outside.”
“Until the day a car zoomed down and hit me in the side.”

Julian gasped in shock,
“I was fine, but in lots of pain, I was dizzy and a bit bruised.”
“From then on, your Granddad taught me a song, so I was never again confused.”
Mother started to sing to Julian,
Izzy clapped as the rhythm flowed,
And together, they remembered how to stay safe when near a road.

“Hold a hand and sing this song,
When you walk down a busy street,
Use those eyes and those ears before you move your feet.”
Julian snapped his fingers, and his sister hummed along.
“Red means STOP, and green means GO.
Be careful as the cars pass quickly to and fro.”

“Look left, and then look right.
Always walk with someone nearby.
Cross at the zebra crossing, but make sure the road is clear.”
“A lollipop lady can sometimes help,
Tell the cars it’s time to stop.
But make sure you wear something bright so you are nice and easy to spot.”

The family used the song to help them carefully cross each time.
“Red means STOP, and green means GO.
Be careful as the cars pass quickly to and fro.”
It wasn’t long until the park was in sight.
Julian and Izzy were ready to go and play.
But they knew they should not run until the cars and the road were far away.

“Well done,” Mother said,
Then the children were free to go.
She was proud that she could help them learn and be informed.
From that day forward, Julian always remembered.
He taught his children, and then their children, the street safety song.
He made sure everyone was free from harm, no matter what road they walked along.
