In the blistering, snowy ice plains of the Arctic, a huddle of penguin parents were patiently waiting for their penguin chicks to be born.

Day and night, the soon-to-be mum and dad penguins took turns protecting the eggs from the cold and from hungry birds.

When the warmer months finally arrived, small cracks and chirps could be heard. The eggs were hatching! Proud parents beamed as they showed off their grey ball of fluff to surrounding penguins.

When all the penguin chicks had hatched, the parents took pride in teaching them how to waddle, how to swim, and how to catch the best fish.

All the penguins chirped cheerfully until the colder blizzard months rolled in.

The penguins went from smiling to being scared very quickly. The adults huddled all the babies together as they tried to create a makeshift shield, blocking out the brutal snow and winds. But this was not enough for one little penguin chick.

Whisked away into the howling winds, Scout was left alone and afraid. She struggled to an icy rock, where she tried to take shelter until the storm had passed. It felt like forever.

After a while, the weather calmed, and Scout was finally able to open her eyes. But, to her dismay, she could not see her family. There were no penguins or animals. Nothing in sight apart from white mounds.

For a while, Scout cried and cried. She didn’t know what to do. She thought about staying put in the hope someone would find her. But in the end, she knew what she had to do. There was a little voice inside her head shouting, “Be brave; you can do this!”

Eventually, Scout began her journey to find her family, with the little voice inside of her head repeating itself over and over. The walk was long and tiresome, and there were plenty of times when Scout thought about giving up.

Just when she thought she couldn’t go any further, she saw a patch of white moving. Scout rubbed her tired eyes, thinking she had made it up. But again, a white patch moved closer and closer, until Scout could make it out to be a polar bear cub.

“Hello,” the cub said curiously.

“Hi, I’m Scout, and I’m lost. Have you seen my parents?”

Oh, I’m sorry,” the polar bear replied. “I haven’t seen your parents, but I hope you find them soon!”

The sad penguin kept walking until she heard the cub shout in the distance, “Remember, you are brave like a bear.”

With that thought in mind, Scout continued.

‘I am brave like a bear,’ she repeated.

The daylight was fading, but Scout kept going. In the distance, she could see many grey lumps lounging around.

As Scout approached, she noticed the grey lumps were a family of seals.

“Hello,” Scout said. “I’m Scout, and I am lost. Please, have you seen my family?”

All the seals looked at the baby penguin in surprise.

Oh, my dear!” A female seal cried, “Are you all alone? You are very courageous!”

The seals had not seen Scout’s family, but they all awarded her praise for being so brave.

“You are so strong!” they clapped.

Scout kept walking on through the night, repeating to herself, “I am brave and I am strong.”

Tired and hungry, Scout found a small rock to nestle behind for the night. Near the rock was a hole in the ice, which led to the sea. Scout tried hard to remember what her parents had taught her about swimming and fishing for food. Within a matter of moments, she had caught some dinner.

“Well done!” a voice called, which made Scout jump.

A snowy owl was sitting on the rock, watching.

“I have never seen a baby chick so clever before.”

Scout told the owl her story.

“You are smart, like an owl,” he whispered before flying away into the night.

Scout fell asleep, repeating those words.

‘I am brave, I am strong, and I am smart’.

When morning came around, Scout waddled near the edge of the ice in the hope she’d see some penguins swimming. Instead, a large whale with a very pointy horn emerged.

“Hi,” the narwhal said happily.

“Have you seen my family?” Scout asked.

“What do they look like?”

Scout explained how the other penguin chicks looked like her, and her parents were bigger with darker feathers.

The narwhal thought for a minute, “Hm…I have seen some animals that look a bit like you. They went that way”.

Overjoyed, Scout thanked the narwhal and quickly waddled in the direction of her horn.

Waving goodbye, the narwhal shouted, “Remember, you are unique, like a narwhal.”

Scout jumped on her stomach and began to slide across the ice slopes.

‘I am brave, I am strong, I am smart, and I am unique’.

Soon, a litter of arctic foxes began running alongside her.

“I hope you find your parents!” They shouted when they began to slow, “You are powerful!

‘I am brave, I am strong, I am smart, I am unique, and I am powerful!”

Soon enough, Scout could see a herd of grey, black, and white blurs. She could barely believe her eyes. She had done it!

“Mama, Papa! Wait!” She shouted until the whole huddle of penguins turned around in amazement.

“Scout!” they called in disbelief.

Two adult penguins ran forward with tears in their eyes.

“Scout! We thought we had lost you forever!” her Mum cried.

Finally reunited, they gave each other a long, warm hug.

“How did you find us?” Dad Penguin asked.

“I remembered to stay positive,” Scout replied. “I am brave, I am strong, I am smart, I am unique, and I am powerful.”

Her parents chirped cheerfully once again, “And you are so loved!”
