Noah and his family were finishing their dinner one night,
When Noah remembered something his teacher told him, that gave him quite a fright.
“Wasting lots of food makes the earth start to frown.”
He looked down at his plate to see that there was leftover food all around.

When it was time to tidy up, Noah wanted to lend a helping hand.
He wondered, ‘What can we do so we don’t spoil our land?’
“Great question,” something replied, as if they read Noah’s mind.
But he could not see anyone near, not to the side nor behind.

“Who said that?” Noah asked nervously as the cutlery began to clink.
And then suddenly, lots of eyes all around started to blink.
There were eyes on the fridge, the cupboards, and even the microwave too.
“Us!” they replied cheerfully, as if a talking kitchen were nothing new.

“We’re the kitchen helpers,” they all began to sing, “making dishes for you to eat.”
“Keeping your food fresh and the worktop nice and neat”.
“We heard your food waste worries,” the oven started to say.
“We want to help,” the toaster jumped in, “and keep the grumpy bins away”.

Noah agreed to listen to the kitchen ideas on reducing food waste.
So they each cleared their throats, ready to sing a tune of good taste.
“We are the kitchen helpers, and we want to make the world a better place.”
“So compost, donate, and recycle so we don’t leave a nasty trace”.

“Compost, donate, and recycle?” Noah repeated it with a puzzled look.
“Yes!” replied a spatula, “there’s lots to do with the food you don’t eat or don’t cook”.
Noah was pleasantly surprised to hear this and couldn’t wait for more.
So he sat at the kitchen table, looking eagerly towards the refrigerator door.

Then the freezer began to sing, “Compost is mixing your food waste with scraps of paper and a little soil.”
“Then invite the wriggly worms to come feed, dig and coil”.
“But what does the compost do?” Noah asked, thinking of all of the worms hard work.
“Well, it helps other healthy gardens grow,” a little teaspoon squeaked with an almighty smirk.

“Oh…” Noah said, “But how do we donate scraps of food?”
Then the kitchen sang in harmony, “Leave it in the garden for a mama and her brood”.
“Lots of wild animals like to eat old vegetables and fruit.”
“Like foxes, hedgehogs, birds, and even a little newt.”

A little teacup then chipped in, “And farmers welcome any donations that come.”
Noah bounced excitedly. “Really? There is a farm near that might take some.”
“Yes, they use it to feed their farm animals too.”
“Which is great for growing big, healthy pigs and cows that like to…”

When Noah’s giggles faded, the recycling bin continued on.
“We must remember to recycle our rubbish when all the food is done and gone.”
Noah picked up some cans and cartons to put into the different bins.
“Carefully sort them into the correct one to keep them with happy grins.”

In harmony once more, the kitchen began to sweetly sing.
“There is lots to do to reduce how much rubbish we toss and fling.”
“And there are lots of ways to help our animals and our earth along the way.”
“So don’t forget to compost, donate, and recycle, and not leave our earth glum and grey.”

Soon the music and singing dimmed down.
The kitchen faces disappeared, and the fun began to slow.
Noah was then all alone, but he had memories, he would never forget.
Disposing of food the right way will keep our earth from feeling any threat.
